How to Use AI to Prepare for a Job Interview: Prompt and Checklist

A job interview can feel stressful, especially when you are unsure which questions the employer may ask. An AI assistant can help you organize your preparation, practice your answers, and identify important information in a job description.

AI should not invent qualifications or replace your judgment. Its best role is helping you present your real experience clearly and confidently.

1. Gather the information you need

Before using AI, collect the following:

  • The job title

  • The job description

  • The company’s public website

  • Your résumé

  • A list of your skills and accomplishments

  • The date and format of the interview

  • Questions or topics that make you nervous

Remove private information before sharing any document with an AI tool. Do not include your home address, phone number, Social Security number, passwords, banking information, or references’ private contact details.

2. Ask AI to analyze the job description

A long job description may contain repeated information. AI can organize it into a shorter preparation guide.

Copy and paste this prompt:

“Review the job description below and identify the five most important responsibilities, required skills, preferred qualifications, and keywords. Explain what the employer is likely looking for in plain language. Do not add requirements that are not included in the description.

Job description:
[Paste the job description here.]”

Review the response and compare it with the original job posting. AI can misunderstand information, so confirm every important detail yourself.

3. Match your experience to the position

Once you understand the employer’s priorities, create examples from your actual work history.

Use this prompt:

“Based on the job description and my real experience below, create a matching table. Include the employer’s requirement, my relevant experience, and one example I could discuss during the interview. Do not invent skills, dates, results, or responsibilities.

My experience:
[Describe your relevant work, education, volunteer service, or projects.]”

If there is a qualification you do not have, do not ask AI to hide it. Instead, identify related experience and explain how you are prepared to learn.

4. Build answers with the STAR method

The STAR method helps organize answers to questions about past experiences:

  • Situation: What was happening?

  • Task: What responsibility or goal did you have?

  • Action: What did you personally do?

  • Result: What happened because of your actions?

Try this prompt:

“Help me organize the following true work experience into a natural STAR interview answer. Keep the answer under two minutes. Use only the information I provide and do not exaggerate the result.

Experience:
[Describe what happened, what you did, and the outcome.]”

Read the answer aloud and change any wording that does not sound like you. The goal is to speak naturally—not memorize a script word for word.

5. Practice likely interview questions

Ask AI to generate questions based on the actual position:

“Act as an interviewer hiring for a [job title] position. Ask me 10 realistic interview questions based on the job description below. Include a mixture of general, behavioral, and role-specific questions. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer before continuing.”

Common questions may include:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • Why are you interested in this position?

  • What are your greatest strengths?

  • Describe a difficult problem you solved.

  • How do you organize competing priorities?

  • Tell me about a mistake and what you learned.

  • Why should we hire you?

  • What questions do you have for us?

After answering, ask AI to identify unclear parts. Tell it not to rewrite your story or add accomplishments you did not mention.

6. Prepare a strong “Tell me about yourself” answer

This answer should be a short professional introduction, not your complete life story.

A simple structure is:

  1. Your current professional focus

  2. Your most relevant experience

  3. One or two useful strengths

  4. Why this opportunity interests you

Prompt:

“Create a 60-second answer to ‘Tell me about yourself’ using only the information below. Make it professional, friendly, and relevant to the [job title] position. Do not invent experience or achievements.

My background:
[Add your information.]”

Practice until you can explain the same ideas comfortably without reading.

7. Prepare questions for the employer

An interview is also an opportunity to decide whether the position is right for you. Prepare three to five thoughtful questions.

Examples include:

  • What would success look like during the first 90 days?

  • What are the most important priorities for this role?

  • How does the team normally communicate and collaborate?

  • What training or onboarding is provided?

  • How will performance be measured?

  • What are the next steps in the hiring process?

Avoid asking questions that are already answered clearly on the company’s website or in the job description.

8. Create your final interview checklist

Ask AI to turn your preparation into a checklist:

“Create a one-page interview preparation checklist for a [video, phone, or in-person] interview. Include company research, documents, technology, clothing, travel, questions for the employer, and follow-up steps.”

Your checklist may include:

  • Confirm the interview date and time

  • Verify the time zone

  • Review the job description

  • Research the company using official sources

  • Prepare three relevant work examples

  • Practice common questions

  • Prepare questions for the interviewer

  • Test your camera, microphone, and internet

  • Choose professional clothing

  • Bring or save copies of your résumé

  • Send a brief thank-you message afterward

Final thoughts

AI can make interview preparation more organized, but it cannot replace honesty, personal judgment, or genuine experience. Always review its suggestions, correct inaccurate statements, and use your own voice.

You do not need a perfect answer to every question. Focus on understanding the position, explaining your real qualifications clearly, and showing that you are prepared to contribute and learn.
